Cerebras Systems, the AI chip company supported by the UAE’s G42, announced a strategic partnership with France’s Mistral on Thursday, claiming to have helped the European firm achieve a significant speed milestone.
Mistral, a rising player in open-source AI technology, is positioning itself as a direct competitor to Meta Platforms and China’s DeepSeek, both of which made waves in the global market last month with claims of superior performance at reduced costs. These companies are all vying for dominance in the rapidly growing field, alongside OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.
In a notable development, Mistral unveiled its new application, Le Chat, which, according to the company, can respond to user inquiries at a rate of 1,000 words per second.
Cerebras, a key player in the AI hardware space, asserted that it is powering the system behind this impressive achievement, claiming that Mistral’s AI assistant now holds the title of the world’s fastest, surpassing both OpenAI and DeepSeek in speed.
Based in Silicon Valley, Cerebras has recently filed for an initial public offering (IPO), though its launch has been delayed as U.S. authorities examine the potential implications of G42’s involvement with the company. Despite the delay, Cerebras remains one of the few companies challenging Nvidia’s dominance in AI model training. However, this latest collaboration with Mistral is focused on AI inference, the process of delivering model outputs to end users, rather than model training.
As AI competitors increasingly match OpenAI’s performance, speed—particularly in providing real-time responses—has become a key differentiator, said Andrew Feldman, CEO of Cerebras.
“You need more compute power during inference to provide better answers,” Feldman explained in an interview with Reuters. “This marks our first major win with a tier-one model maker, and we’re extremely proud of the outcome.”
