SAO PAULO, March 12 (Reuters) – Ireland has committed 15 million euros ($16.3 million) to Brazil’s Amazon Fund, marking its first contribution to the initiative dedicated to combating deforestation and preserving the world’s largest tropical rainforest, Brazil’s Environment Ministry announced on Wednesday.
The donation, set to be distributed over the next three years, elevates the number of donor countries supporting the fund to eight, the ministry stated.
Managed by Brazil’s national development bank, the Amazon Fund finances projects focused on preventing and monitoring deforestation while promoting sustainable development in the region. To date, it has supported 123 initiatives with a total investment of 3.1 billion reais ($534.6 million).
Other contributors to the fund include Norway, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Switzerland, and Japan.
Ireland’s pledge was announced during a meeting in São Paulo between Brazil’s Environment Minister Marina Silva and Ireland’s Transportation Minister Sean Canney, according to the statement.
