U.S. Stocks Slightly Lower as Technology and Consumer Sectors Weigh on Markets

U.S. stocks concluded Tuesday’s trading session with a slight decline, primarily driven by losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods, and Consumer Services sectors. The major indices recorded the following changes at the close of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE):

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) retreated 0.05%.
The S&P 500 index dipped 0.57%.
The NASDAQ Composite index experienced a 1.04% decline.

Top performers on the DJIA included Chevron Corp (NYSE: CVX), which exhibited a 1.92% gain, closing at 166.90. Similarly, Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE: GS) added 1.87%, ending the day at 330.73, and Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ: HON) increased by 1.61% to close at 189.21.

Conversely, the weakest performers on the DJIA were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT), which recorded a 1.83% decrease to close at 331.77, Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE: PG) with a 1.78% decline, closing at 151.99, and Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL), which dropped 1.71% to 176.30.

The S&P 500’s top performers included Zions Bancorporation (NASDAQ: ZION), climbing 6.80% to 37.09, PNC Financial Services Group Inc (NYSE: PNC) with a 5.70% increase to settle at 124.75, and KeyCorp (NYSE: KEY), gaining 4.91% to close at 11.76. Meanwhile, Oracle Corporation (NYSE: ORCL) was the poorest performer on the S&P 500, plunging 13.50% to 109.60.

On the NASDAQ Composite, Axcella Health Inc (NASDAQ: AXLA) saw the most significant gains, soaring 59.17% to 1.14, followed by Avalo Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ: AVTX), which rose by 45.47% to close at 0.12, and Impel Neuropharma Inc (NASDAQ: IMPL), increasing by 34.55% to 0.55. In contrast, ACELYRIN Inc (NASDAQ: SLRN) saw the steepest decline, falling 54.12% to 12.80, followed by Datasea Inc (NASDAQ: DTSS), down 50.67% to 0.32, and Sight Sciences Inc (NASDAQ: SGHT), which dropped 49.62% to 3.28.

In total, falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by 1483 to 1419, with 80 ending unchanged. On the NASDAQ Stock Exchange, 1857 stocks fell, 1598 advanced, and 149 ended unchanged.

Several notable declines were recorded in specific stocks. Advance Auto Parts Inc (NYSE: AAP) reached a 5-year low, plummeting 8.11% to 57.47. ACELYRIN Inc (NASDAQ: SLRN) also hit all-time lows, losing 54.12% to close at 12.80. Meanwhile, Datasea Inc (NASDAQ: DTSS) and Sight Sciences Inc (NASDAQ: SGHT) both fell to all-time lows, decreasing by 50.67% and 49.62% respectively.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), measuring implied volatility in S&P 500 options, rose by 3.12% to reach 14.23.

In the commodities market, Gold Futures for December delivery declined by 0.59%, or $11.55, settling at $1,935.65 per troy ounce. On the other hand, Crude oil for delivery in October surged by 1.83% to $88.89 per barrel, and the November Brent oil contract saw a 1.64% increase to trade at $92.13 per barrel.

In the currency markets, the EUR/USD exchange rate remained unchanged at 1.07, while USD/JPY rose by 0.36% to reach 147.10.

The U.S. Dollar Index Futures showed a slight increase of 0.12%, closing at 104.31.
