Africa-focused fund managers are being called upon to seize an opportunity for advancement through the Obuntu Launchpad program. Designed to refine investment methodologies, optimize fund performance, and amplify influence, the program represents a pivotal step forward for the continent’s investment landscape.
Facilitated by the Obuntu Foundation, a key player in nurturing Africa-focused fund managers for the future, in collaboration with the Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA), a renowned global non-profit dedicated to fostering economic development and entrepreneurship, applications are now open for the third iteration of the Obuntu Launchpad program.
Over a span of 12 months, the program aims to equip fledgling fund managers with indispensable skills and insights crucial for establishing and managing successful funds within the African context. Tailored training modules, engagement opportunities with Limited Partners (LPs), and a collaborative network for knowledge exchange and deal sourcing constitute the core components of this initiative.
By leveraging the collective expertise and resources within the venture capital ecosystem, MEDA and Obuntu are committed to bolstering support for first-time fund managers venturing into belief capital investments. Successful candidates can expect ongoing mentorship, fundraising guidance, and the cultivation of innovative fund structures tailored to the specific requirements of African startups. Distinguished industry figures such as Lewam Kefela (Partech), Andreata Muforo (TLcom Capital), and Fope Adelowo (Helios) will lead practitioner-led sessions, enriching participants with invaluable insights.
Since its inception in 2022, the Obuntu Launchpad Fellowship has witnessed the successful completion of two cohorts, nurturing 24 fellows representing 21 funds with a collective target Assets Under Management (AUM) amounting to US$281 million. Noteworthy alumni include luminaries such as Yewande Odumoso, founding partner at HoaQ; Aly El Shalakany, managing partner at Acasia; Thandeka Xaba, general partner at Savant; and Emmanuel Adegboye, head of Madica.
The collaboration with MEDA heralds a new chapter for the Obuntu Foundation, fortifying its mission to empower a vibrant ecosystem of African fund managers. By attracting substantial investments from both local and international stakeholders, this alliance injects vital capital into a continent ripe with untapped potential yet plagued by underfunding of its burgeoning startup scene.
“We are thrilled to unite with MEDA, an organization that shares our fervor for empowering African entrepreneurs and fostering economic growth,” remarked Wambui Kinya, co-founder of the Obuntu Foundation. “This partnership underscores our past achievements and promises to elevate our Launchpad Fellowship to unprecedented heights, offering our fellows unparalleled access to MEDA’s extensive network, resources, and expertise.”
