Japan recorded an unprecedented surge in visitors in June, with official data revealing 3.14 million tourists, driven by the weak yen that is invigorating the nation’s tourism sector and bolstering the economy.
According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the number of foreign visitors for both business and leisure surpassed the previous record set in March, climbing from 3.04 million in May. This surge brought the total number of travelers for the first half of the year to a record-breaking 17.78 million, setting a strong pace to exceed the pre-pandemic annual high of 31.9 million in 2019.
The government anticipates that tourist spending will reach 8 trillion yen (approximately $50 billion) this year, as reported by the Nikkei newspaper on Thursday.
