AI Servers Drive Growth and Competition, Dell and Super Micro in Focus

by Barbara

The realm of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving from the stuff of science fiction into tangible technological advancements, challenging the notion that space is the final frontier. As the AI revolution unfolds, the tech landscape is being reshaped, with significant implications for companies in the industry.

On September 16, Mizuho Financial Group released a pivotal research report that put the spotlight on two prominent players in the AI server market: Dell Technologies (DELL) and Super Micro Computer (SMCI). Analyst Vijay Rakesh’s report, titled “Delivering the AI Punch,” highlights the transformative impact of generative AI technologies—those capable of creating text, images, and other data.

Rakesh’s analysis underscores the critical role of AI servers, the specialized infrastructure essential for supporting AI workloads. He anticipates substantial growth in this sector, forecasting that the market for AI servers will reach approximately $406 billion by the end of 2027, driven by enterprise demand and cloud service providers. This represents a robust compound annual growth rate of around 54%.

Dell Technologies is positioned as a leader in this space, receiving an outperform rating from Rakesh with a price target of $135. Conversely, Super Micro Computer has been assigned a neutral rating with a price target of $450. Despite its initial advantage due to tight GPU supply, Super Micro is reportedly losing market share as Dell gains ground, leveraging its extensive server, PC, and storage portfolio.

Rakesh notes that while AI represents a long-term growth driver, the market is experiencing increased competition, which is exerting pressure on profit margins. He warns that margins could face additional compression if upcoming server architectures continue to favor less efficient air-cooling systems over advanced liquid-cooling solutions. Liquid-cooled servers, though more efficient in power and water usage, entail higher initial capital expenditures.

The report also highlights the importance of a diversified portfolio. Companies with broader product ranges, such as Dell, are better positioned to weather margin pressures and benefit from long-term value creation. In contrast, Super Micro is facing challenges related to share loss, margin erosion, negative free cash flow, and internal control issues.
