Optus in Talks to Sell Sports Streaming Service to Nine Entertainment

by Barbara

Optus, the Australian telecommunications giant owned by Singapore Telecommunications, is reportedly in negotiations to sell its sports streaming platform, Optus Sport, to media conglomerate Nine Entertainment. The potential deal, as reported by the Australian Financial Review (AFR) on Monday, would transfer streaming rights for the English Premier League to Nine’s local streaming service, Stan. This move would enable Optus to concentrate more on its core telecom business.

Neither Optus, Nine Entertainment, nor SingTel immediately responded to Reuters’ inquiries regarding the discussions.

This report follows the recent A$3.4 billion ($2.11 billion) acquisition of Foxtel by DAZN, a British sports network. The deal, which took place last month, will see DAZN enter the Australian market with broadcasting rights for the Australian Football League and the National Rugby League.
