Monroe Capital LLC, a U.S.-based private credit manager, is expanding its presence in Australia, aiming to capitalize on the nation’s rapidly growing A$4.1 trillion ($2.6 trillion) pension sector. The firm has established its first Australian office in Sydney and appointed Galen Fu as director of business development, Monroe Capital announced in a statement on Wednesday. Fu previously served as a director in the capital markets team at Hines Investment Management, a U.S. real estate asset manager.
The move comes as private credit gains traction in Australia’s real estate and corporate lending sectors, filling gaps left by traditional banks that have scaled back lending due to stricter capital regulations. Major global investors, including Warburg Pincus, Nuveen, and PGIM, have launched Australia-focused property debt funds, while Ares Management, Blackstone, and KKR regularly provide leveraged loans for private equity deals in the region.
Headquartered in Chicago, Monroe Capital manages $20.3 billion in assets, with a core focus on lending to mid-market companies across the U.S. and Canada, according to its website.
The expansion underscores growing interest from international credit firms in Australia’s evolving investment landscape, as alternative lending continues to reshape the country’s financial sector.
