Foxconn Chairman Young Liu clarified on Wednesday that the company is not looking to acquire Japan’s Nissan but rather seeks to establish a cooperative partnership with the automaker. His comments come amid renewed interest in Foxconn’s potential role in the evolving global automotive industry.
Nissan, which has recently been struggling, found itself at a crossroads after it withdrew from discussions with rival Honda last week regarding a potential merger that would have created the world’s third-largest automaker. This decision comes as the automotive industry faces ongoing shifts and strategic reconfigurations.
A source close to the matter revealed to Reuters that Nissan is open to collaborating with Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics giant known for being the world’s largest contract manufacturer and the key producer of Apple’s iPhones.
Liu, speaking to the press at Foxconn’s headquarters in New Taipei, emphasized that the company’s focus is not on acquiring Nissan. “Purchasing its shares is not our aim; our aim is cooperation,” he stated.
Additionally, Liu mentioned that Foxconn is also exploring potential partnerships with France’s Renault, given Renault’s stake in Nissan, signaling the company’s interest in further strengthening its presence in the automotive sector.
