In a significant step to combat energy disruptions caused by Russian attacks, the Energy Community Secretariat has facilitated the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at hospitals across Ukraine. As part of an EU-funded initiative, these systems are already operational in hospitals in the Zhytomyr, Kyiv, and Khmelnytskyi regions, with 83 facilities set to benefit from this green energy project. The number of hospitals requesting installations continues to grow as the project expands.
The solar panels installed are part of the ‘Ray of Hope’ project, first announced by the European Commission in 2023. These donations, made possible by a consortium of international donors, are playing a vital role in ensuring that Ukraine’s healthcare facilities remain functional despite ongoing energy challenges.
Artur Lorkowski, Director of the Energy Community Secretariat, emphasized the impact of this initiative, stating, “Thanks to our donors from the UK, Germany, the EU, Sweden, Belgium, and Canada, the Fund has turned the Ray of Hope Initiative from concept to action. By focusing on renewable energy and storage systems, we ensure that hospitals continue to operate and reduce their dependence on Ukraine’s national power grid.”
This initiative is part of the broader Ukraine Energy Support Fund, which is managed by the Energy Community Secretariat and operates in close coordination with Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Health. The Fund, which aims to restore and fortify Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, has received €995 million in contributions as of January 10, 2025.
Through these efforts, the Ray of Hope project is not only enhancing the resilience of Ukrainian hospitals but also providing a sustainable energy solution to mitigate the impact of the ongoing conflict on Ukraine’s healthcare system. As new requests for solar installations continue to pour in, the project stands as a beacon of international solidarity and support for Ukraine’s future.
