by sun

September 06, 2023 – Tabreed, an Abu Dhabi-based cooling-as-a-service provider, is set to invest a staggering $200 million to establish a cutting-edge cooling infrastructure spanning 1,25,000 refrigeration tons (RT) in Hyderabad Pharma City. This ambitious initiative was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Tabreed and the Telangana government on Tuesday.

The discussions leading to this milestone took place in Abu Dhabi, where Tabreed’s leadership engaged with a delegation from the State government, led by Telangana’s Minister for Information Technology and Industries, K. T. Rama Rao, and Jayesh Ranjan, Secretary of IT and Industries, Government of Telangana.

Sudheer Perla, Country Head of Tabreed India, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “This is an interesting model. For the first time in India, we are going to offer cooling services to multiple customers within a single campus.” He further emphasized, “Through this MoU, we aim to showcase the benefits of district cooling to drive sustainable infrastructure development in the region and contribute to Telangana’s vision of becoming a model for eco-friendly urbanization.”

The company predicts that this cost-efficient model will lead to savings of 6,800 GWh of power and 41,600 mega liters of water, ultimately reducing greenhouse gas emissions by saving 6.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over the project’s lifetime.

The Government of Telangana has also inked an MoU with Tabreed to explore district cooling infrastructure in existing and upcoming commercial districts, including Cyberabad and other mixed-use development areas. This endeavor has the potential to reduce over 200 MW of peak electricity demand, resulting in a CO2 reduction of 18 million tons over a 30-year period. Additionally, it will help mitigate the heat island effect, further enhancing Hyderabad’s reputation as one of the premier cities to live and work in Asia.

Minister K. T. Rama Rao emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “By prioritizing cooling as a key action area through cool roof policies and energy-efficient district cooling, we are shaping a greener and healthier environment for our communities, contributing significantly to our ambitious vision of making Telangana net-zero by 2047.”

Reflecting on the collaboration, Khaled Abdulla Al Qubaisi, Chairman of Tabreed, said, “The partnership between Tabreed and the Government of Telangana represents a pivotal moment in sustainable infrastructure development. By introducing our expertise in district cooling to the world’s largest net-zero pharmaceutical cluster, we are not only shaping the future of industrial clusters but also setting a powerful precedent for environmental responsibility.”
